Derry Woman Freed on Bail Despite Sixth Alcohol Breach in Assault Case
Kelly Anne O'Kane, 37, of Holly Lane in Derry awaits trial in Derry Crown Court on charges of assaulting her mother in 2024. The delay in her case results from an ongoing barrister's strike.
On April 13, staff at a medical institution reported that O'Kane consumed alcohol, breaching her bail conditions. A breath test showed 85 milligrams of alcohol, exceeding the legal driving limit of 35 milligrams.
A Police Service of Northern Ireland officer informed Derry Magistrates Court on Tuesday that this marked O'Kane's sixth bail breach over recent months. The officer opposed bail release, citing concerns over further alcohol consumption.
The court heard O'Kane has 62 prior convictions. Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott noted all breaches involved alcohol, with no new offences or contact with her mother.
District Judge Oonagh Mullan granted bail but stated it represents O'Kane's final chance, with no release if she returns. O'Kane must appear again on April 17.
