Two Derry residents faced court proceedings after allegedly breaching bail conditions, including curfews and orders to abstain from alcohol.

Kevin O'Doherty, aged 39 and of St Brecan's Park, was on bail for offences including assault causing grievous bodily harm. His conditions required him to observe a curfew and avoid alcohol. Police were alerted on July 19 when O'Doherty did not answer his phone, and officers later attended his address and found him intoxicated.

A defence lawyer stated that O'Doherty had been at home watching the World Cup and stepped outside for a cigarette, describing the breach as not sophisticated. District Judge Suzanne Rice granted continuing bail with the same conditions but issued what she called a final warning. She specified that the alcohol ban applied regardless of any football event. O'Doherty is due back in court on September 3.

In a separate matter, Cherish Devine, 30, from Abercorn Road, appeared charged with assaulting police and breaching bail by being intoxicated. The court heard that Devine phoned police, and when officers called back she directed abusive language at them. She was later found intoxicated, with a breath alcohol reading nearly three times the legal driving limit. The assault charge relates to an allegation that she kicked an officer.

A defence barrister told the court that Devine has a significant problem with alcohol and was seeking treatment, requesting bail so she could attend a course. Judge Rice noted the defendant's extensive criminal record and said the court could not be satisfied she would comply with conditions. Devine was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear again on September 4.
