A 20-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter following the death of a west Belfast man who was assaulted outside a bar on Suffolk Road.

Carl Holland, 31, from Rinnalea Walk, sustained a serious head injury during the incident on the evening of 12 June. He was taken to hospital where he remained in a critical condition until his death on 18 June. The accused was charged on 19 June, according to police.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said the suspect arrived by taxi, punched Mr Holland, and then left in the same taxi. The assault occurred at approximately 9pm. Detectives believe a verbal altercation had taken place inside the licensed premises earlier that evening.

PSNI officers have appealed for witnesses and anyone with information to come forward, with particular interest in footage from CCTV, mobile phones or dash cams.

Funeral arrangements have been announced. A service will be held at St Oliver Plunkett Church on 26 June at 1pm, followed by committal at Roselawn Crematorium. Mr Holland will leave his grandmother's house earlier that day.

West Belfast MP Paul Maskey described the attack as devastating. People Before Profit MLA Gerry Carroll warned of the irreversible consequences of violence and offered condolences to the family. Councillor Maskey said the local community was in shock and called the act senseless.

The Public Prosecution Service will review the manslaughter charge as part of standard procedure.
