A man has died in hospital after being assaulted in north Belfast, prompting a murder investigation. Police said Paul Mackin Jr, aged 44 and from the north of the city, was attacked at a property on Duncairn Parade on the evening of Monday 20 July.

Officers and an ambulance crew attended the scene just before 6pm. Mr Mackin was taken to hospital for treatment but died from his injuries on Wednesday 22 July.

Three men were arrested shortly after the assault on suspicion of attempted murder. A 41-year-old man who remained in custody has now been rearrested on suspicion of murder. A 40-year-old man was released on bail pending further enquiries, while a 32-year-old man has been released unconditionally.

Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland's Major Investigation Team are leading the investigation. They have appealed for anyone with information to come forward, quoting reference 1454 20/07/26. Information can be provided to police or anonymously to Crimestoppers.

The public have been asked to avoid speculation about the circumstances, which police said could be distressing for the family and friends of Mr Mackin and could affect criminal justice proceedings.
