A Derry community worker has expressed concern over a recent incident at the Peace Garden, describing it as frightening for onlookers including tourists. The worker, named Martin, called for a larger police presence in the Peace Garden and Foyle Street area.

Martin said he has heard of frequent gatherings of large groups of young people in the area, many of whom are not engaged in any wrongdoing. He stressed the presence of vulnerable individuals, such as street drinkers and young people, and said increased policing is important for their safety.

He clarified that he does not want to see young people criminalised and that the majority present are not doing anything illegal. However, he voiced concern that a future incident could result in serious injury or death.

Recounting the incident on Thursday, Martin said there was a sense of fear among those present. He said the situation could have escalated and that such events set the city back. He said he asked one young person to go home but was met with an offensive response.

Martin linked the issues to cuts in funding for community groups and summer schemes, leaving young people with little to do. He urged young people to be mindful of their behaviour and the risks, saying the intention is not to criminalise them but to warn them of how quickly situations can turn.

He said those in authority need to examine the situation, adding that young people are capable and deserve happy lives.
