Liam Whoriskey was released from prison earlier this year after serving seven and a half years of a 15-year sentence for the manslaughter of three-year-old Kayden McGuinness.

Whoriskey was convicted following the death of Kayden at a flat in Colmcille Court in the Bogside area of Derry on 17 September 2017. The child sustained multiple blunt force injuries including 15 bruises to the head and face, resulting in brain swelling and bleeding.

The court also convicted Whoriskey of child cruelty for an earlier incident in August 2017 in which Kayden suffered a bruised nose and two black eyes. Kayden had been in Whoriskey's sole care overnight when the fatal injuries occurred.

Whoriskey has been observed in Derry city in recent weeks and has posted on social media. Prison sources stated that his licence conditions require him to remain outside the Derry area, particularly the Bogside.

Kayden's mother Erin McLaughlin stated after the conviction that she was satisfied with the outcome. Relatives of the child have warned Whoriskey against returning to the area.

Whoriskey was engaged to Kayden's mother at the time of the offences. The case involved evidence from 27 prosecution witnesses and four defence witnesses during the trial.
