A 30-year-old man appeared via video link at Londonderry Magistrates’ Court on March 27 charged with the murder of Amy Doherty. The 28-year-old mother of two suffered injuries at her home in Summer Meadows Mews, Derry, on March 21 and died in hospital.

Police charged the man, named Connor McNamee of Meehan's Terrace in Derry, with murder aggravated by domestic abuse. Additional charges include possession of an offensive weapon, a kitchen knife, with intent to commit an indictable offence, and possession of a Class A controlled drug.

The man was arrested over the weekend following the incident. He had been deemed medically unfit for interview earlier in the week. A police officer connected him to the charges during proceedings.

He appeared in a wheelchair with bruising to his face and confirmed he understood the charges. No bail application was made. Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott requested a psychiatric report for his client.

District Judge Oonagh Mullan offered condolences to Doherty's family and friends. The man is due to appear again on April 23.

The Public Prosecution Service will review all charges as standard procedure. A vigil took place that evening at the Guildhall in Derry.
