Ian McCulloch, a football referee from Magherafelt known as ‘Slicer’, has died at his home on Golf Terrace. He was surrounded by family.

The North West Referees Association said it was deeply saddened by the loss of a colleague and friend. They noted his many years of service to the game and his commitment to fairness on the field.

Several clubs across Northern Ireland, including Tobermore United, Moyola Park, Coagh United, Magherafelt Sky Blues, Draperstown Celtic, and Desertmartin, issued statements of condolence. They described him as a gentleman and a respected figure in local football who was always willing to chat with players and coaches.

Desertmartin FC said McCulloch served the game with integrity and humility, earning the respect of players, coaches, and fellow officials. Other clubs that paid tribute included Portrush FC, Dervock FC, Ballycastle FC, Coleraine Crusaders FC, and Cookstown Youth FC.

A service of thanksgiving will take place at Christ Church, Castledawson, on Thursday 30 July at 2pm, followed by burial in St Swithin’s Parish Churchyard, Magherafelt.

He is survived by his wife Eithne, his children Gary and Karen, his mother Muriel, and his brothers Victor, Keith, and Ronnie, and his sister Arlene. His father Andy predeceased him.
