Francis McFadden, known as Francie, a lifelong Derry City supporter and former referee, died at Altnagelvin Hospital on Friday. He was in his 80s.

McFadden regularly attended matches in Block E of the South End Stand at Brandywell Stadium. He travelled across Ireland to follow Derry City games. He was at the home match against Drogheda on March 20, which ended 2-2.

The Pride of Northside supporters club noted McFadden's unexpected passing. The club called him a highly respected former member and former treasurer who performed his duties with care. Members recalled trips to away matches where McFadden sang, entertained with monologues and ensured friends travelled safely.

Originally from the Killea area, McFadden refereed local matches from 1963. He officiated Irish League games for years. With brothers Redmond, Pius and the late Jimmy, he formed a family of referees. He took part in events at Bull Park 7s and North West tournaments. McFadden retired after his final Carndonagh Summer Cup game in 1986.

McFadden is survived by wife Veronica, children Martin, Samuel, Kevin and Bernadette, their spouses Caitlin, Michelle, Collette and Don, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and siblings Redmond, Kevin, Mary, Anne and Pius.

His funeral is scheduled for 2pm Wednesday at Long Tower.
