Magherafelt has been named Best Kept Medium Town at the 2026 Northern Ireland Best Kept Awards, securing the title for the second consecutive year. The award was presented by the Northern Ireland Amenity Council, which has run the competition for 69 years to recognise environmental quality, civic pride, sustainability and community engagement.

Two other Mid Ulster locations were also honoured. Donaghmore was named runner-up in the Best Kept Small Village category, and Coolnafranky Park in Cookstown won the Best Kept Medium Housing Area award.

Judges described Magherafelt as a pleasant place to visit, highlighting its appeal to residents and visitors. They singled out the sculpture at the top of Broad Street as an example of how public art can improve a town centre's appearance. Mid Ulster District Council staff were also commended for maintaining the town to a high standard.

Councillor Deirdre Varsani, chair of Mid Ulster District Council, said the awards reflected pride across the district. She said the council was delighted with Magherafelt's repeat win and equally proud of the achievements in Donaghmore and Coolnafranky Park. She credited the efforts of council staff, residents, community groups, businesses and volunteers.

The Best Kept Awards cover categories including cities, towns, villages, housing areas and community heroes.
