Giant Sun Sculpture Helios to Light Up Derry Guildhall for Science Festival
Luke Jerram's 23ft sculpture of the sun, Helios, will be displayed at Derry's Guildhall from February 15 to early March 2027 as part of the Northern Ireland Science Festival. The festival opens on February 15 with a welcome from Professor Lucie Green, a solar scientist who advised on the project.
Festival Director Sarah Jones said this will be the first time Helios is displayed in Northern Ireland. She described it as a combination of solar science and artistic creativity, giving visitors a new view of the sun. Jones said those who enjoyed Jerram's previous work Gaia would be impressed by Helios.
Artist Luke Jerram noted his longstanding relationship with Derry, where several of his works, including Gaia and Museum of the Moon, have been displayed. He said the Guildhall is a fantastic venue and that Helios highlights the science of the sun and its significance for life, culture, and religion.
Mayor Grace Uí Niallais said she looked forward to the festival and expected visitors to view the piece. She said it would inspire engagement with science and showcase Derry and Strabane as a destination for culture, creativity, and learning.
The Northern Ireland Science Festival is in its 13th year. Helios will be on display for three weeks.
