North Coast luxury cabins awarded five-star Tourism NI grading
A luxury hideaway on the North Coast has been awarded a five-star grading by Tourism NI. The Botháns, located near Macosquin on a 13-acre site within Binevenagh Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, received the recognition for its rural setting, accommodation design, and guest hospitality.
The retreat is owned by Rob and Lucy Oates and features two handcrafted cabins, each offering a different experience. Lir View has panoramic views across the North Atlantic, while The Hideaway is situated beside The Botháns lake and provides a more secluded waterside escape. Both cabins include private outdoor baths, firepits, and outdoor furniture.
Tourism NI assessors described the setting as exceptional and the overall experience as serene and relaxing. The outdoor amenities were praised as outstanding, and the cabin exteriors and lighting were recognised for creating a welcoming atmosphere.
Steven Kane, Senior Quality and Standards Advisor at Tourism NI, said that achieving five stars is a fantastic achievement for The Botháns and a testament to the exceptional quality and hospitality on offer. He highlighted the stunning rural setting, stylish design, outstanding facilities, and commitment to guest comfort.
The owners said they are honoured to receive the award. They wanted to create a place where guests can have time and space to relax surrounded by the Causeway Coast landscape. Each cabin was designed as an opportunity to escape from everyday pressures, and they worked with local businesses wherever possible.
The couple also wanted to ensure the accommodation appealed to families. One cabin includes a bespoke three-bed bunkroom designed for family adventures and different generations to spend time together. Lucy Oates said it has been wonderful to see families creating memories during cabin adventures.
Tourism NI's Quality Grading Scheme provides an independent assessment of accommodation standards, covering hotels, guest houses, bed and breakfasts, self-catering properties, hostels, and other guest accommodation. Five stars is the highest available grading. The award adds another five-star offering to the North Coast tourism sector and demonstrates that smaller independently operated retreats can achieve the highest standards.
