Belfast-Produced Series Explores Modern Ceremonies Across Ireland
A new observational documentary series produced by Belfast company Below the Radar will premiere on RTÉ One this evening.
'Breith, Beatha, Bás' (Birth, Life, Death) follows celebrants across Ireland as they assist individuals and families in marking major life events, from naming ceremonies to weddings and funerals.
The four-part series examines shifts in Irish society around faith, marriage, and death. It notes that in 2024, civil marriage ceremonies outnumbered Catholic church weddings for the first time.
Celebrant Nóra Ní Raghallaí appears in the series and speaks about the importance of ceremonies that reflect the true identities and wishes of those involved. Ciara Turley from County Down, who was raised with faith but sought more choice for her own children, qualified as a naming celebrant. Her work is featured in the opening episode.
In County Kildare, celebrant Sinéad Gould conducts a same-sex wedding and discusses fostering positive emotions and authenticity in her ceremonies. Later episodes introduce Dara Ó Maoldha, a former priest who now works as a Celtic celebrant on Inis Mór.
The series was directed by Seán Ó Baoill, who is originally from Connemara and now lives in Belfast. He described the series as focusing on the people at its core and said it offers insight into how Ireland is changing, while still showing a deep human desire for community and connection during life's key moments.
Funding came from the Irish Language Broadcast Fund administered by Northern Ireland Screen. The first episode airs tonight at 8.30pm on RTÉ One.
