Husband-and-Wife Team Leads Children's Irish Language Publishing in West Belfast
Caitríona Nic Sheáin and Andy Whitson operate children's publishing company An tSnáthaid Mhór from an attic space in An Chultúrlann, located in Belfast's Gaeltacht Quarter.
The pair produce picture books based on Irish mythology and the Rita series, which has been adapted for television on Cúla4. They created Rita with author Máire Zepf. Andy Whitson provides illustrations for the stories.
They developed six short digital classroom workshops in Ulster Irish, now used in schools. Last year, they released their first bilingual book, Cailín Sinséir Bhéal Feirste/The Belfast Gingerbread Girl, written by Marianne McShane and translated by Áine Ni Ghlinn. The story features St George's Market and other Belfast landmarks.
Caitríona Nic Sheáin, from Shaws Road Gaeltacht, taught for three decades in Irish-medium schools. Andy Whitson taught at Glenveagh Special School and earlier contributed to Bob Curran's Field Guide to Irish Fairies.
The couple will speak at the West Belfast Small Business Roundtable on 31 March in An Chultúrlann from 8am to 9am.
