Detectives investigating the murder of a man at an 11th night bonfire in Larne 26 years ago have renewed their appeal for information.

Andrew Cairns, 24, was attacked on 11 July 2000 at a bonfire in Boyne Square, ahead of the annual Twelfth celebrations. The assault occurred near the Rangers Supporters Club on Greenland Drive.

A group of up to ten men beat Mr Cairns and then shot him once in the head. Several attackers continued to kick him as he lay on the ground before fleeing on foot. One man was seen leaving in a red Vauxhall Calibra car.

The incident took place in full view of several hundred people, including many children. Mr Cairns was taken to Moyle Hospital but died in the early hours of 12 July.

Detective Chief Inspector Byrne from the Legacy Investigation Branch said the attackers have never been convicted of murder, though some individuals were arrested and found guilty of offences linked to the killing.

"Andrew's family deserve justice and answers to what happened to Andrew that night," Detective Chief Inspector Byrne said.

He appealed directly to anyone who was at the bonfire and witnessed the altercation or the attack, or who knows the identities of those involved. He also urged the perpetrators to come forward.

"A number of people were involved, they know who they are and they are going to have to live with that for the rest of their lives," he said. "I would appeal directly to them to think about the devastating effect this has had, and continues to have, on Andrew's family."
