Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found inside a burning car in Portadown on Saturday night. The vehicle was on fire in the Harford Street area when officers and firefighters were called to the scene shortly before 10pm.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service extinguished the blaze, but the car was significantly damaged and windows were smashed. Scorch damage was recorded on a neighbouring property. Ammunition technical officers attended and confirmed there was no risk to the public.

A man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released. A post-mortem examination is to be carried out to establish the cause of death.

Chief Inspector Tierney said the circumstances are still under investigation and appealed for anyone who was in the area at the time to contact police on 101, quoting reference 1764 of 08/08/26.

Carla Lockhart, the MP for Upper Bann, described the incident as tragic and urged people not to speculate on social media, particularly about the identity of the deceased. She said she was liaising with police as their investigation progressed.

Alliance MLA Eóin Tennyson also expressed condolences and said speculation should be avoided out of respect for the family.

Open Arms Church, which is on Harford Street, was unable to hold Sunday worship because of the police cordon. A spokesperson said the congregation was devastated and its thoughts were with all those affected.

Police have asked anyone with information to come forward.
