A 29-year-old man has been remanded in custody after appearing at Belfast Magistrates' Court charged in connection with serious disorder in the east of the city earlier this month.

Christopher McLaughlin of Devon Drive appeared on Tuesday charged with riotous assembly, attempted murder, and two counts of arson endangering life with intent. The arson charges relate to a Glider bus set alight on the Newtownards Road and a property on McMaster Street on 9 June. The attempted murder charge names a specific victim.

A PSNI detective told the court she could connect the accused to all four charges. No further details of the alleged offences were disclosed during the brief hearing.

McLaughlin did not seek bail and his solicitor indicated he had no suitable address. District Judge Natasha Fitzsimons remanded him in custody and ordered him to appear again via videolink on 28 July.

The charges stem from violent disorder that broke out following a knife attack in the city. A series of protests escalated into unrest across Belfast and other parts of Northern Ireland, during which vehicles and homes were targeted and some families had to leave their properties.

The charges will now be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service as standard procedure.
