A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to 40 months for his role in last summer's large-scale disorder in Ballymena.

Michael Elliot, whose address was given as Raceview Road, appeared at Antrim Crown Court on Monday 6 July. He was convicted of common law riot and received a split sentence: 20 months to be served in custody and the remaining 20 months on licence.

The court was told that Elliot was identified as a participant in the disorder that erupted on Tuesday 10 June 2025. During those events, extensive damage was inflicted on roads, homes, vehicles and local business premises.

Police officers came under sustained attack. Petrol bombs, heavy masonry and fireworks were thrown at them, leaving many injured. Detective Inspector Gallagher stated that residents were left in fear for their lives amid what he called shameful scenes.

Detective Inspector Gallagher said the dedicated investigation team had worked to ensure those involved were prosecuted, and he indicated that Monday's sentencing would be one of many resulting from the disorder.

The PSNI renewed its appeal for information, urging anyone who witnessed criminality or suffered damage to contact police on 101 or use the non-emergency reporting form. Anonymous reports can be made to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
