Newtownbutler man convicted of 2006 quadruple fatal crash dies at home
Daniel McDonnell, the Newtownbutler man jailed for causing the deaths of four friends in a 2006 crash, has died suddenly at his home.
In July 2006, McDonnell was driving drunk and speeding on the Moorlough Road near Lisnaskea when he lost control and struck a tree. The collision killed passengers Peter Leonard and Jonathan McDonald, both 21, along with Anita Swift, 16, and Danica O'Rourke, 17.
McDonnell, then 21, pleaded guilty to four counts of causing death by dangerous driving and received a seven-year prison sentence. At the sentencing, Judge David McFarland stated that there was little indication of genuine remorse from McDonnell.
A death notice confirmed he died peacefully but suddenly on Thursday at his home. He is survived by his parents Michael and Rita, his partner Laura, and siblings Arlene, Clara, and Dwayne.
Funeral arrangements include a repose at Swift & McCaffrey Funeral Home in Lisnaskea on Saturday from 4pm to 8pm and Sunday from 4pm to 7pm. The funeral service is scheduled for Sunday at 11pm at the Church of the Immaculate Conception.
