The Aisling Centre will host its sixth annual Cuilcagh Mountain Dawn Trek on Saturday, September 12 at 6.30am. The event marks World Suicide Prevention Day, which is observed annually on September 10.

The trek will take place on Cuilcagh Mountain in County Fermanagh. SD Kells has sponsored this year's event.

Organisers say people take part for many reasons, including to remember loved ones, support their own healing, take on a personal challenge, or show solidarity with those struggling with their mental health.

Bridie Sweeney, CEO of the Aisling Centre, said the trek has become an important date in the organisation's calendar. She noted that suicide has touched many people and coming together as a community is important. She added that the trek gives people a chance to come together with family, friends and like-minded people in a supportive space.

The current theme for World Suicide Prevention Day is 'Changing the Narrative on Suicide, Start the Conversation'. It encourages people to approach discussions around suicide with empathy, understanding and compassion.

People have travelled from across the island of Ireland to take part in previous years. Many highlighted the scenery, peaceful surroundings and sense of community created by the event.

While the trek can be challenging, organisers stress that the aim is to participate rather than necessarily reach the summit. Shorter walking options are also available.

Registration costs £25 and includes a T-shirt, medal, parking and refreshments. Anyone interested can register via Eventbrite.
