Derry quay to glow after dark with new light display at maritime festival
Derry's quayside will be illuminated by a new night-time installation at the upcoming Foyle Maritime Festival. The after-dark display, called Sails of Solas, will run from 10pm to 3am on June 25, 26, and 27.
Visitors can expect glowing masts, illuminated figures, and floating flowers reflected on the River Foyle. The artwork, delivered by Visual Spectrum and Wonderlights, transforms the docked Tall Ships into a spectacle of light, shadow, and maritime legend.
Aisling McCallion, Events Manager at Derry City and Strabane District Council, said the concept offers a unique way to experience the river. She encouraged anyone nearby to walk the quay and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere as lights fall across the water.
The display will stretch from the Council Offices along the quay to Sainsburys, covering the North and South Pontoon and The Dock. Installations include a family of sea lions and a ghostly figure known as Dopey Dick, referencing the city's seafaring past.
The Foyle Maritime Festival runs from June 25 to June 28, 2026, and is delivered by the council in partnership with Foyle Port and the Loughs Agency, with funding from Tourism NI and Diageo. The full programme is available online.
