Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council’s communities committee has approved the release of a draft pitch strategy for public consultation. The document covers the period 2026 to 2031 and identifies support for the development of one full-size GAA pitch in the next five to ten years.

The strategy notes there are just under 130 GAA teams in the district, fielding more than 3,000 players across four codes. By comparison, football remains the highest-participation sport, with over 6,000 participants.

Councillor Gary McCleave highlighted the disparity, questioning how a single GAA pitch could be adequate for 3,000 registered members. Councillor Ryan Carlin also described the allocation as low, noting the same plan provides for four soccer pitches.

The council report points to potential shared use of school and community facilities to supplement provision. A final version of the strategy, including financial details, is expected to be presented to members in autumn 2026 following the consultation.

Public consultation will take place over the summer months.
