ABC Council Launches Synthetic Pitch Replacement with £2m Investment
Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council has started work on replacing synthetic sports pitches. Contractors Kompan and Haffey began resurfacing and enhancement at Ardmore 2G hockey pitch and Cathedral Road 3G pitch in Armagh. These sites form Phase 1 of the Synthetic Pitch Replacement Programme.
The council allocated just under £2 million for Phase 1 upgrades. The investment covers maintenance of sporting facilities in shared spaces. Further Phase 1 projects scheduled for later this year include Lurgan Park tennis courts, North Lurgan MUGA, Ardowen MUGA in Craigavon, Churchill Park MUGA in Portadown, and Scotch Street MUGA in Craigavon.
Council staff notified clubs and users of Ardmore and Cathedral Road pitches about the works and completion timelines before starting. The council plans direct communication with users of other facilities once timeframes are set. Efforts aim to reduce disruption to sports activities.
Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Jessica Johnston visited the Ardmore site start with Armagh area elected members. She stated the programme will bring community improvements. She noted investment supports local sports clubs and activity. She highlighted physical and mental health gains from sport and its role in uniting people. She expressed council support for the projects. She anticipated completion of more projects across the borough later this year.
