Education Minister Paul Givan has rejected claims that the Strule Shared Education Campus in Omagh will provide inadequate facilities for Gaelic games.

The £350 million project will bring together six schools on the former Lisanelly Army Barracks site when it opens in September 2028.

GAA officials have raised concerns about the allocation of five pitches for Gaelic games against 16 for soccer, as well as the absence of floodlights and ball catchers.

The proposed Gaelic pitches will measure the minimum permitted size of 130 metres by 80 metres and will include overlapping soccer markings.

Givan, speaking at a topping-out ceremony for the main structural works, said the criticism was ill-founded and based on inaccurate reporting.

He stated that pitches are being built to proper scales for GAA use, along with facilities for hockey and soccer, and that the site will meet the needs of all sports.

Construction has been underway for almost a year. The main structural works have been completed for Omagh CBS, Sacred Heart College, Loreto Grammar School, Omagh High School and Omagh Academy.
