The Department of Education has responded to concerns from the Tyrone County Board about Gaelic games facilities at the Strule Education Campus in Omagh.

The county board raised issues over the number of pitches allocated to Gaelic games compared to soccer. They also noted potential flooding risks and the size of the pitches, set at the minimum 130 by 80 metres.

A department spokesperson stated that the campus includes five pitches for Gaelic games, four for rugby, and ten for soccer. Each pitch supports multiple sports for curricular and extracurricular use.

The spokesperson added that all five Gaelic pitches meet official size requirements and that the campus will improve Gaelic provision for the schools involved.

Plans followed consultations with school leaders and physical education staff. The department confirmed the facilities meet the schools' sporting needs.

The department acknowledged flooding risks, as the campus sits in a low-lying area. All grass pitches carry some flood potential, with two Gaelic pitches on a flood plain that have been waterlogged. Designs account for flood management, approved by planning authorities.

The department confirmed plans include ball catchers behind Gaelic pitch goals, though detailed designs with the contractor are ongoing.
