The Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) reported 284 provisional deaths registered during the week ending 29 May 2026. This figure is 18 lower than the 302 recorded in the previous week.

Mortality estimates for the same period had predicted 277 deaths. The actual total therefore represents an excess of seven deaths above the expected level.

Deaths among males numbered 132, while 152 female deaths were registered. Expected mortality for the week was 141 for males and 136 for females, meaning a shortfall of nine male deaths and an excess of 16 female deaths compared with the modelled trend.

By 29 May, a total of 7,933 deaths had been registered in Northern Ireland during 2026. Males accounted for 50.5% of these and females 49.5%. The 75-and-over age group represented 67.0% of all registrations.

In terms of place of death, 45.4% occurred in hospital, 17.5% in care homes, and 37.1% at residential addresses, hospices or other locations.

Death certificates mentioning influenza or pneumonia totalled 37 for the week, contributing to a cumulative 1,440 such mentions in 2026.

NISRA cautioned that registration activity may have been affected by closures of General Registration Offices around the Spring public holiday, and advised care when interpreting data for the holiday week and the week that follows.

The dataset was published on 5 June 2026.
