A total of 205 deaths were registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 17 July, according to provisional data from the Statistics and Research Agency.

This was 125 fewer than the 330 registered the previous week, and 129 below the expected number of 334 for that week, based on historical mortality trends.

The total included 114 male and 91 female deaths. Expected figures for the week were 170 for males and 164 for females, so deaths for both sexes fell short of projections.

For the year to 17 July, 9,983 deaths have been registered. Just over half (50.6%) were male, and two-thirds (67.1%) were aged 75 and over.

Almost half of all deaths in 2026 up to that point (45.4%) occurred in hospital, while 17.6% took place in care homes and 37.0% at residential addresses, hospices or other locations.

The weekly data also show 29 deaths registered that week mentioned influenza or pneumonia on the death certificate, bringing the year-to-date total for such mentions to 1,750.

Officials cautioned that registration numbers may have been affected by General Registration Office closures around the July bank holidays, potentially distorting comparisons with other weeks.
