Provisional data from the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency show 277 deaths registered in Northern Ireland for the week ending 20 March 2026. This marks a decrease of 107 from the 384 registered the previous week.

The agency released the tables at 9.30am on 27 March 2026. Expected deaths for the week totalled 362 based on mortality rates and trends. Excess deaths stood at minus 85 relative to this estimate.

Of the registered deaths, 143 involved males and 134 females. Expected figures were 185 for males and 177 for females, with excess deaths at minus 42 for males and minus 43 for females.

By 20 March 2026, 4,619 deaths had been registered for the year. Males accounted for 50.5% and females 49.5%. Some 68.2% occurred in those aged 75 and over.

Locations included hospitals for 2,114 deaths or 45.8%, care homes for 842 or 18.2%, and residential addresses, hospices or other sites for 1,663 or 36.0%.

Deaths mentioning flu and or pneumonia on certificates totalled 56 for the week, raising the year-to-date figure to 930. Provisional deaths occurring that week numbered 243, with registrations possibly affected by St Patrick’s Day office closures.
