The number of deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 3 July was 24 lower than the expected figure, provisional data shows.

The Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) reported 312 deaths were registered in week 27 of 2026, an increase of 31 from the previous week's 281. The expected number for the week, based on mortality trends, was 336.

Among the registered deaths, 155 were male and 157 female. The expected figures were 171 for males and 165 for females, giving an excess of -16 for males and -8 for females.

In the first half of 2026, up to 3 July, there have been 9,448 deaths registered. Over two-thirds (67.1%) of these were among people aged 75 and over. The split between sexes was nearly even, with males accounting for 50.4% and females 49.6%.

The release also details where deaths occurred. Of the total registered so far this year, 45.3% were in hospital, 17.6% in care homes, and 37.2% at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.

Deaths mentioning flu or pneumonia on the death certificate totalled 49 in week 27, bringing the year-to-date figure to 1,669.

A separate measure looking at deaths by date of occurrence, rather than registration, recorded 248 deaths in the week ending 3 July, based on registrations processed up to 8 July.

The data tables were published by NISRA on 10 July.
