Northern Ireland Records 414 Deaths in Week Ending 17 April 2026
Northern Ireland registered 414 deaths in the week ending 17 April 2026. This marked an increase of 127 from the prior week's total of 287.
The figure exceeded the estimated expected deaths of 350 by 64. Registration office closures around Easter may have affected the count.
Male deaths totaled 209, above the expected 179 by 30. Female deaths numbered 205, surpassing the expected 171 by 34.
By 17 April 2026, 6,019 deaths had been registered year-to-date. Males accounted for 50.9% and females 49.1%. Some 67.6% occurred in those aged 75 and over.
Of year-to-date deaths, 45.2% took place in hospitals, 17.6% in care homes, and 37.2% at homes, hospices, or other sites.
Deaths mentioning flu or pneumonia on certificates reached 62 in the week, for a 2026 total of 1,152.
Provisional deaths occurring that week, registered by 22 April, stood at 270.
