CAFRE students visit Kilwaughter Lime to see engineering in practice
Level 3 Land-Based Engineering students from the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) at Greenmount Campus visited Kilwaughter Lime, a mineral and quarry processing company near Larne, County Antrim.
The visit aimed to connect the students’ classroom learning with real-world industrial applications. Staff delivered a presentation on the company’s history, its product range, and the role of lime products across agriculture, construction, and environmental management.
A guided tour of the quarry and processing facilities followed. Students observed extraction techniques, crushing and screening processes, and the operation of large-scale plant and machinery. Health and safety procedures were highlighted throughout.
The experience gave students a clearer understanding of how land-based engineering skills are applied in the quarrying and materials processing sector. It also illustrated potential career paths within the industry.
CAFRE thanked Kilwaughter Lime staff for hosting the visit and sharing expertise. Greenmount Campus will open to the public during Open Farm Weekend on 13 and 14 June, from 11am to 4pm, offering prospective students a chance to meet staff, view facilities and machinery, and learn about available courses.
