A student at South West College in Omagh has won a national award recognising learners who overcome significant personal challenges to achieve educational success.

Ursula Cullen was named winner of the Against All Odds (Adult) category at the Aspiration Awards 2026. The award is presented by NCFE, an educational charity and awarding organisation.

Cullen completed the NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning at the college's Omagh campus. She returned to education almost 30 years after completing her A Levels.

While studying part-time, Cullen balanced her coursework with caring for her family. She supported her husband through early onset Alzheimer's until he required full-time care, and she cared for a daughter following a serious car accident. She also faced bereavement and her mother's terminal illness during this period.

Despite these demands, Cullen made strong academic progress. She developed digital skills, mastered online learning platforms, and consistently produced high standard work. She also encouraged fellow students and contributed positively to the learning environment.

Fey Cole, Curriculum Manager for Health, Life and Personal Sciences at South West College, praised Cullen's achievement. Cole said Cullen demonstrated the value of returning to education in adulthood, building confidence and vocational skills.

Cullen also secured employment after excelling in a placement at a local school during her studies.

Cullen said the support from her family, school, college, tutor and classmates was invaluable. She encouraged others not to let fear or lack of confidence stop them from enrolling on a course.

Cole added that the college is proud of Cullen and confident she will use her diploma to help children and young people reach their potential.
