The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) held an open day at its Greenmount Campus in Antrim. Staff welcomed visitors to learn about horticulture and floristry courses.

Senior lecturers outlined study pathways and CAFRE's practical training methods. Attendees split into groups for tours of campus facilities.

Floristry tour groups visited the Horticulture Centre to see cut flower production. They then viewed student arrangements in the Floristry Studio. Lecturers Anne Marie Grant and Sherry Suett explained training, design skills and assessment for Level 2 and Level 3 floristry programmes.

Horticulture visitors toured Sports Turf facilities, where staff described skills and technology for maintaining playing surfaces. The group saw plant production and environmental management in the Horticulture Centre. They continued to the Walled Garden for plant identification, maintenance and design instruction.

Level 3 horticulture students Cameron Gilbert and Ramona McCloskey gave a live landscaping demonstration.

David Dowd, Head of Horticulture Branch, stated CAFRE aims to attract school leavers and career changers to these sectors. He noted the courses provide knowledge and experience for evolving fields.

CAFRE offers floristry at Level 2 and 3. Horticulture ranges from Level 2 to BSc (Hons) degree. Full-time, part-time and apprenticeship options support various learners.
