Three Individuals Appear in Derry Court on Disorder Charges After April Incidents
Three people faced Derry's Magistrate’s Court on Monday over separate disorderly incidents on April 17 and 18.
Lee Doherty, 34, of no fixed abode in Derry, was arrested after police stopped to check on a man he pointed at while on the footpath. Officers noted erratic behaviour, shouting, swearing, and spitting, suspecting drug influence. A search found no items. After release, he insulted police, leading to arrest for disorderly behaviour. He resisted restraint.
Defence barrister Dean Mooney stated Doherty had a bad record. Mooney added police stopped without a call, sought drugs, caused no injuries, and saw no violence. District Judge Oonagh Mullan noted his record, including 36 assaults on police. She sentenced him to four months custody, suspended for twelve months, and a £100 fine.
Cianan Ryan, 19, of Rosses Gate in Derry, faced seven charges from an April 17 incident: grievous bodily harm with intent to avoid apprehension, three assaults on police, wounding an officer, resisting arrest, and possessing a bottle as an offensive weapon.
Police responded to a fight report in Sackville Street with a male description. They stopped a matching individual who fled. During restraint, a Buckfast bottle he held smashed. Ryan allegedly lashed out. One officer received a heavy arm gash needing hospital treatment. Two officers required hospital care.
Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said Ryan had no record and was young. MacDermott noted injuries occurred on takedown and charges might reduce after time. Prosecutor indicated Crown Court if charges held. District Judge Oonagh Mullan called offences serious and remanded Ryan in custody to May 14. Bail opposed.
Selena Mongan, 28, of Kavanagh Court in Derry, was charged with criminal damage, assaulting her uncle, and three counts of assaulting police, all on April 18.
Police received a 999 call from Mongan's uncle and grandmother stating she drank at their home, became angry, kicked a hole in the wall, overturned a table, damaged pictures, and assaulted her uncle. Officers found her nearby, extremely intoxicated, needing help to sit up. She allegedly kicked two officers, requiring limb restraints. A cell van took her into custody. Breath test showed twice the legal limit. In custody, she allegedly spat at an officer.
Defence counsel Grainne McAnaney said Mongan needed alcohol help. District Judge Oonagh Mullan noted Mongan had nine suspended sentences, breached bail alcohol conditions, and did nothing to help herself. Mullan refused bail and remanded her to April 30.
