A Derry man has received a six-month prison sentence after admitting assaulting and resisting police officers.

Ryan Doherty, 24, of Clon Dara, appeared before District Judge Alanah McSorley at Derry Magistrates' Court.

The incident occurred on 20 July last year when officers responded to a theft report at premises in Sackville Street.

Police stopped Doherty after he matched a description of those being sought.

Doherty kicked out and spat at officers, requiring a spit guard before his arrest.

Defence counsel told the court Doherty had been in custody since the incident and had his Crown Court licence revoked.

The judge described spitting at police as a despicable offence and imposed the six-month term.
