Ballygawley Boy Odhrán McGirr Dies After Cancer Battle
Odhrán McGirr, an eight-year-old from Ballygawley in Tyrone, died on Saturday after a diagnosis of high-grade glioblastoma in January 2025. The rare brain tumour prompted surgeries, radiotherapy and chemotherapy over several months.
His Requiem Mass takes place today at 1pm at St Malachy’s Church in Ballymacilroy. The Ballygawley community plans to attend.
Errigal Ciaran GAC, Odhrán’s club, described him as a cherished young player who brought joy and resilience to the team. The club pledged support to his parents Patrick and Catriona, and siblings Ruairí and Saoirse.
A Tyrone GAA spokesperson noted Odhrán’s love for sport and his role as a caring big brother who faced his illness with strength.
Weeks before his death, Odhrán led the Tyrone senior team onto the field for their National League game against Offaly in Dungannon. A minute’s silence preceded Tyrone’s National League match against Cork in Omagh on Sunday.
A fundraising campaign collected £137,000 for Odhrán, his family and supporting charities.
