Pádraig Rafferty, a pupil at St Joseph and St James’s Primary School in Poyntzpass, County Armagh, died on Monday morning at Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry. He had received a brain tumour diagnosis in 2023.

The son of John and Lorraine Rafferty and brother of Grace and Niamh died in the arms of his parents, sisters and family. He was the grandson of Owen and Philomena Fegan, Pat and Marie Rafferty, and Paddy and Marie Rafferty.

Pádraig played underage football for Redmond O’Hanlon’s GAC in Poyntzpass. The club suspended all activities, including training, matches and meetings across age groups, as a mark of respect.

Redmond O’Hanlon’s GAC stated the club learned of his passing with sadness and noted the community mourns one of its own.

Crossmaglen Rangers GAC expressed condolences to Pádraig’s parents, sisters, extended family and Redmond O’Hanlon’s GAC.

Thomas Davis GAA in Newry offered sympathies to the family, Redmond O’Hanlon’s GAC and friends.

Sinn Féin councillor Oonagh Magennis extended condolences to John, Lorraine, Grace, Niamh, grandparents Paddy and Marie Rafferty and the wider family.

The family home at 9 Tullynacross Road, Poyntzpass, remains private on Monday. Family and close friends may visit from 12pm to 9pm on Tuesday.

Remains will leave the home on Wednesday at 11.30am for 12pm Requiem Mass at St Joseph’s Church in Poyntzpass, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.
