Father PJ Gormley, a priest from Augher in Tyrone, has died. He played as a defender for Augher St Macartan's GAA club and won Tyrone Junior, Intermediate and Senior medals with the team in 1962, 1964 and 1976.

Ordained to the SMA Fathers in 1972, Father Gormley served as a missionary in Zambia for decades. He worked on building churches through small Christian communities. He promoted teamwork among religious groups there.

In recent years, Father Gormley supported the Spirit of Paul McGirr Trust and the Peregrini group at St Ciaran's College in Ballygawley.

He was the third member of Augher St Macartan's 1976 O'Neill Cup winning team to die recently, after Tony Marlow and Tom McKeagney.

Augher St Macartan's club stated Father Gormley stayed connected to the club and parish during his time abroad.

A Mass took place at Dromantine Retreat Centre on Saturday. His Requiem Mass occurred at St Macartan's Church in Augher on Monday afternoon.
