Funeral Set for Eight-Year-Old GAA Player Odhrán McGirr in Ballygawley
Odhrán McGirr, an eight-year-old from Ballygawley, Tyrone, passed away at home on Saturday. He had received a diagnosis of aggressive high-grade glioblastoma in January last year. A fundraising effort collected over £136,000 for his treatment.
His parents are Patrick and Catriona McGirr. He leaves behind his brother Ruairí and sister Saoirse. Grandparents include Johnny and the late Patricia McGirr, along with Michael-John and Rena Carmody from Kilkishen, County Clare.
The funeral procession leaves his home on Tuesday at 12.30pm. It proceeds via Church Street and Main Street to St Malachy’s Church, Ballymacilroy, for a 1pm Mass. Burial follows in the adjoining cemetery.
Odhrán played for Errigal Ciaran GAC. The club described him as a young player who showed courage during his illness. They extended sympathies to his parents, siblings, and the McGirr and Carmody families.
Tyrone GAA noted his love for sport and his role as a caring older brother. Weeks ago, he led the Tyrone Senior Footballers onto the field at Dún Geanainn.
Sinn Féin MLA Colm Gildernew, for Fermanagh and South Tyrone, offered condolences to Odhrán's family, friends, and the Ballygawley and Errigal Ciarán community.
