Ballykelly Man Charged with Threatening Palestinian in Derry City Centre
Shane Doherty, 28, of Tamlough Park in Ballykelly, appeared in Derry court charged with offences that took place on March 21.
A police officer linked Doherty to the charges. At around 1pm that day, Doherty entered a fast food outlet in Derry city centre. He caused a disturbance and shouted racial slurs. As he left, he spat blood on the glass door.
Doherty then went to an apartment occupied by a Palestinian family. He banged on the door and demanded entry. The family closed the door on him. Soon after, one family member left the apartment. Doherty chased him while continuing to shout abuse. Several witnesses saw the chase.
Police interviewed Doherty. He admitted the actions described by witnesses. He denied racial motivation. The court heard he lost his job due to alcohol issues.
Defence counsel Stephen McNicholl noted Doherty's alcohol problems but said he had a chance to get another job.
The court granted Doherty bail. Conditions include no contact with the alleged victims and no entry to the cityside of Derry. He must appear again on April 20.
