A 41-year-old man has been charged with 12 offences after a police pursuit in West Belfast ended in a collision at a busy roundabout.

Road policing officers from Sprucefield observed a white Seat vehicle acting suspiciously in the Divismore area. When the driver noticed police, he failed to stop and a pursuit began.

As the vehicle approached Broadway roundabout, the driver drove the wrong way around the junction and towards motorway slip roads, directly into oncoming traffic. The car then collided with an unmarked police vehicle carrying members of the Armed Response Unit.

The man, from East Belfast, was arrested and charged with driving while disqualified, no insurance, failing to stop for police, three counts of attempted grievous bodily harm, possession of Class A and Class C drugs, and fraudulent use of a vehicle registration mark. The vehicle had been displaying number plates from another car and was seized.

Two police officers received injuries that were not serious. Three members of the public also suffered minor injuries, with one person requiring stitches to a head wound.

Follow-up searches at an address in East Belfast uncovered additional drugs and a large sum of cash.

The accused appeared in court the following morning.

In a separate incident later the same day, interceptors located a stolen vehicle in the Poleglass area. The car had been taken with its keys shortly before. Two people were arrested and are assisting police with inquiries.
