Model Aircraft Club Offers Social Outlet for Veterans at Newtownards Airfield
A group of armed forces veterans meets at Newtownards Airfield to build and fly model aircraft, with backing from the charity Help for Heroes.
Last week, representatives from the charity’s Community Development Team visited the airfield to observe the group’s activities and progress.
The group is led by Craig Kane, with support from community builders Alex Baillie and Glenn Barr.
During the visit, Alderman Trevor Cummings, the Ards and North Down Veterans Champion, joined a listening event with participants to hear how the project could be developed further.
A model aircraft assembled by the group and decorated in Help for Heroes colours was flown, with Scrabo Tower visible in the distance.
Help for Heroes stated that community-led projects such as this one boost confidence and create meaningful social connections for veterans and their families.
Organisers hope the group will attract more members from the armed forces community in the months ahead.
