Communities Minister Gordon Lyons attended a sporting event for armed forces veterans in Newtownards on 26 and 27 September.

The Community Sport Series, organised by Help for Heroes, was held at Ards Blair Mayne Wellbeing and Leisure Complex. Veterans and their families took part in a range of inclusive sporting activities.

During his visit, Mr Lyons met attendees and joined in a game of boccia, a Paralympic sport.

The minister said the event showed the positive impact sport can have on veterans' confidence, skills, and connections with others who have had similar experiences.

He highlighted the Veterans Support Line NI, launched earlier this year, which provides a confidential point of contact for benefits, housing, and other services.

His department is also working to strengthen support for veterans through improved access to services, staff training, and engagement with veterans' organisations.

Veteran Mark Wright, formerly of the Light Infantry, said the event helps veterans try different activities and build community.

His wife Fiona welcomed the Veterans Support Line, saying such resources are needed to help veterans access vital support.
