Derry City Lions, a newly formed club of men and women dedicated to serving those in need locally and globally, will host an open meeting at Foyle Arena on Tuesday, August 25 at 7.30pm. Anyone who wants to learn more is invited to attend.

The club is part of Lions Clubs International, one of the world's largest humanitarian organisations. It has 1.4 million members across more than 49,000 clubs in nearly 200 countries, all operating under the motto "We Serve."

The club stated its international focus areas are vision, childhood cancer, diabetes, hunger, youth, disaster relief, environment and humanitarian aid. To maintain harmony within each club, sectarian religion and divisive politics are not discussed. All members are volunteers, all funds raised go to charity, and administrative costs are covered by the members themselves.

Each Lions club operates independently and chooses its own service focus to meet local needs. During its first year, Derry City Lions Club will identify the most pressing needs in Derry and develop a fundraising strategy to address them.

Members from more established Lions Clubs will also attend the open meeting to explain how Lions Clubs operate across the island of Ireland.
