Three police officers were injured when a lorry struck their patrol vehicle during a pursuit in south Down on Saturday night. The officers' injuries are not believed to be serious, but their vehicle was extensively damaged.

Police received a report at approximately 11.25pm on October 17 of a blue articulated lorry swerving on the Moygannon Road in the Warrenpoint area.

Officers located a matching lorry on the Derryleckagh Road in Newry. When signalled to stop, the lorry failed to do so and a short pursuit began.

The lorry was driven at speed on the wrong side of the road before colliding with the police vehicle. It continued towards Rostrevor and later stopped in the Water Street area.

The driver, a 36-year-old man, fled on foot but was detained after a short chase. He was arrested on suspicion of driving while disqualified, driving while unfit through drink or drugs, and dangerous driving. He remains in custody.

Chief Inspector Will Brown thanked officers for putting themselves on the front line to keep people safe, and expressed relief that no one sustained more serious injuries.

Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with dash-cam footage to contact them on 101, quoting reference number 1770 of 17/10/26. Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers.
