A group of 16 people from the Glengormley and Newtownabbey areas will walk a route from Portugal through northern Spain over seven days in June. Eleven members aim to raise funds for Dementia NI, a charity that supports people living with dementia in Northern Ireland.

The idea originated with Louise Shearer from Carrickfergus, a member of the group who train at Valley Leisure Centre. She proposed the challenge in memory of her mother, who died 10 years ago after living with Lewy Body dementia.

The participants built friendships through regular gym sessions. They meet several times a week for circuit training led by Laurence, a group member who motivates them. One participant prepares from home in Galway and will join the team at Dublin Airport before traveling together.

One member has prior experience completing a Camino walk.

Katrina Hughes, donor engagement lead for Dementia NI, expressed gratitude for the fundraising effort. She noted the charity depends on community support to provide peer services across Northern Ireland.
