Bobby Fisher, a long-serving Scouting leader in Newtownards, died on 6 May aged 78.

Fisher, known locally as Skipper, joined 1st Ards Scouts in the early 1980s and held the role of Skipper for four decades. He also served twice as Assistant Ards District Commissioner for Scouts and worked as Ards District Training Advisor.

Born in Carryduff, Fisher began work at age 16 as an apprentice electrical engineer at Kinnegar in Holywood. He later served in the Territorial Army as a telecommunications technician with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and reached the rank of Warrant Officer Class 1.

Fisher lived in Newtownards with his wife Roberta. The couple had two children, Jason and Nicola.

Outside Scouting, Fisher was active in the Army Cadets, the Orange Order, the Royal Black Institution, the Royal British Legion and Freemasonry. He received 50-year service medals from the Orange Order and the Royal Black Institution.

Fisher completed multiple marathons, including the London Marathon, and used the events to raise funds for charity.
