Omagh Road Works Set to Intensify as Town Centre Plans Advance
Motorists in Omagh will encounter additional traffic disruptions in the coming weeks due to ongoing road works. The developments centre on a new dual-carriageway linked to the Strule Shared Education Campus. Harry Bradford from the Department for Infrastructure spoke at a town centre meeting on Thursday.
Bradford noted multiple underground services including electric cables, BT lines, gas, and water have delayed progress on Old Mountfield Road, Gortin Road, and Mountjoy Road. Overnight and weekend closures will occur for resurfacing. He expects completion by autumn.
The campus opening will shift schools from the town centre, easing peak traffic times. Daily signal adjustments already accommodate buses from the depot at 3.50pm with students.
Separate discussions on Omagh town centre regeneration took place at the Strule Arts Centre on Thursday evening. Attendees included business people, community representatives, and members of the public.
Fermanagh and Omagh District Council chair Barry McElduff leads the initiative. A steering group will produce a guiding document. Council staff consider appointing a town centre manager.
McElduff stated local input shapes priorities to support businesses and enhance accessibility. Council chief executive Alison McCullagh raised issues of vacancy, dereliction, and sites vacated by the campus move.
