Three Sites Shortlisted for Possible Omagh Rail Station
Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has identified three potential sites in Omagh town centre for a new railway station. The locations form part of long-term efforts to restore rail connections to the town.
Alison McCullagh, chief executive of the council, shared the update at a meeting on the town's development. The council has consulted Stormont departments, Translink and consultants through the Department for Infrastructure's Strategic Rail Review.
Council officials held formal discussions with Translink on rail plans and with consultants on site options. One site stands out as preferred due to its links to the planned A5 road upgrade, though it sits further from the centre.
Plans for a rail link feature in the council's local development and transport strategies. Land constraints in the town pose difficulties for site selection.
Omagh's previous station operated on Great Northern Road near the memorial for the 1950 rail disaster. Constructed in the 1860s, it closed more than 30 years ago to allow road improvements.
