Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has voted unanimously to develop a charter for ending violence against women and girls. The motion was approved at the final meeting before the summer recess.

The proposal was introduced by Councillor Noeleen Hayes. She stated that violence against women and girls remains a significant societal challenge and noted that the rural and border character of the district creates additional difficulties without extra financial support.

Two local cases were referenced. In Maguiresbridge last year, Vanessa Whyte and her two children were killed. In 2017, Concepta Leonard was murdered and her son Conor survived an attempt on his life nearby.

The charter will be created with input from partner agencies and people with lived experience. It is intended to guide council decision-making, define the responsibilities of organisations, and support awareness efforts. Training will be offered to staff and elected members.

The framework will also be available for community groups, schools, businesses and public bodies to promote respect, equality and safety.
